Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) was notified on 7 September 2005 and launched in February 2006. It is perhaps the largest and most ambitious social security and public works programme in the world.
Women Person-days employment generated under MGNREGA in all the States and UTs of India (except Delhi NCT) was 12236 Lakhs during the Financial Year 2010-11 (P). It was 10381 Lakhs during the Financial Year 2011-12 (P) and was 11667 Lakhs during the Financial Year 2012-13 (P).
In percentage terms, the total Women Person-days employment generated under MGNREGA in all the States and UTs of India (except Delhi NCT) was 48.23% during the Financial Year 2010-11 (P). It was 47.98% during the Financial Year 2011-12 (P) and it was 51.48% during the Financial Year 2012-13 (P).
The ratio of Women Person-days employment generated to the total Person-days employment generated under MGNREGA has shown a sharp rise from 47.98% in 2011-12 to 51.48% in 2012-13, surpassing the landmark of 50% i.e. more women are participating in MGNREGA as compared to men.
The top 5 States, where the maximum number of Women Person-days employment was generated under MGNREGA, during the Financial Year 2012-13 are: Tamil Nadu (3026 Lakhs), Andhra Pradesh (1856 Lakhs), and Rajasthan (1519 Lakhs), Kerala (779 Lakhs) and West Bengal (674 Lakhs).
