The number of wagons in service for Metre gauge in railways in the year 1955-56 was 64073.

The number of wagons in service for Metre gauge in the year 1960-61 was 82938. It recorded a growth of 18865 wagons (29.44%) over the year 1955-56. The number of wagons in service for Metre gauge in the year 1970-71 was 91337. It recorded a growth of 8399 wagons (10.13%) over the year 1960-61.

The number of wagons in service for Metre gauge attained the peak figure of 92553 wagons in the year 1969-70. Thereafter, a long term decline started in the number of wagons in service for Metre gauge.

The number of wagons in service for Metre gauge in the year 1980-81 was 83002. It recorded a decrease of -8335 wagons (-9.13%) over the year 1970-71. The number of wagons in service for Metre gauge in the year 1990-91 was 55357. It recorded a decrease of -27645 wagons (-33.31%) over the year 1980-81. The number of wagons in service for Metre gauge in the year 2000-01 was 13886. It recorded a decrease of -41471 wagons (-74.92%) over the year 1990-91.

The number of wagons in service for Metre gauge in the year 2005-06 was 8344. It recorded a decrease of -5542 wagons (-39.91%) over the year 2000-01. The number of wagons in service for Metre gauge in the year 2010-11 was 4231. It recorded a decrease of -4113 wagons (-49.29%) over the year 2005-06.

The total decrease recorded during the period from 1955-56 to 2013-14 was -60758 wagons. In percentage terms, the decrease was -94.83% during 1955-56 to 2013-14.

The main reason for the decline in the number of wagons in service for Metre gauge in railways, was the conversion of Metre gauge into Broad gauge during the period from 1955-56 to 2013-14.
