The number of wagons of the Indian Railways in service as on 31st March for broad gauge was 198986 in 2000-01. It increased to 228419 as on 31st March in 2013-14.
The number of wagons in service for broad gauge in the Covered category in 2000-01 was 66043. The number of wagons in service for broad gauge in the Covered category in 2001-02 was 63215. It recorded -4.28% decline over the previous year. The number of wagons in service for broad gauge in the Covered category in 2013-14 was 63194. It recorded 1.67% growth over the previous year. The total decline recorded during 2000-01 to 2013-14 was -4.31%.
The number of wagons in service for broad gauge in Open High-sided category in 2000-01 was 89193. The number of wagons in service for broad gauge in Open High-sided category in 2001-02 was 88558. It recorded -0.71% decline over the previous year. The number of wagons in service for broad gauge in Open High-sided category in 2013-14 was 135002. It recorded 0.44% growth over the previous year. The total growth recorded during 2000-01 to 2013-14 was 51.36%.
