Undertrial Prisoners by Education Profile as on 31st December 2019

As on 31st December 2019, there were 330,487 undertrial prisoners in India; out of which 94,533 (28.6%) were illiterate and 235,954 (71.4%) were literate.

The number of undertrial prisoners was 134,749 in India having ‘below class X’ education as on 31.12.2019, which accounted 40.77% of the total undertrial prisoners in India. There were 70,738 undertrial prisoners in India having education of ‘class X & above but below graduation’ as on /12/2019. It accounted 21.4% of the total undertrial prisoners in India as on the same period. The number of undertrial prisoners was 21,042 in India having education of ‘Graduate’ as on 31st December 2019, which accounted 6.37% of the total undertrial prisoners in India.

As on 31st December 2019, the number of undertrial prisoners in India was 3,879 and 5,546 having education of ‘holding tech. degree/diploma’ and ‘post graduate’ respectively. The undertrial prisoners having ‘holding tech. degree/diploma’ education accounted for 1.17% and ‘post graduate’ education accounted for 1.68% of the total undertrial prisoners in India as on 31.12.2019.
