Top 5 Sectors in terms of Corporate Social Responsibility Expenditure from 2014-15 to 2016-17

Every company including public and private sector companies having net worth of Rs. 500 crore or more or turnover of Rs. 1000 crore or more or net profit of Rs. 5 crore or more during the immediately preceding financial year is liable to spend at least 2% of the average net profits of the company made during the three immediately preceding financial years on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities in areas or subjects specified in Schedule VII of the Companies Act, 2013.

CSR expenditure for various sectors was 1. Health/ Eradicating Hunger/ Poverty and malnutrition/ Safe drinking water / Sanitation, 2. Education/ Differently Abled/ Livelihood, 3. Rural development, 4. Environment, Animal Welfare, Conservation of Resources, 5. Swachh Bharat Kosh, 6. Any Other Funds, 7. Gender equality / Women empowerment / Old age homes / Reducing inequalities, 8. Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund, 9. Encouraging Sports, 10. Heritage Art and Culture, 11. Slum Area Development, 12. Clean Ganga Fund and 13. Other Sectors (Technology Incubator and Benefits to Armed Forces, Admin Overheads and others) from 2014-15 to 2016-17.

The total CSR expenditure was Rs. 4719 crore during 2016-17 (up to 30.11.2017). We have seen annual growth of 44.57% in total CSR expenditure to Rs. 13827.86 crore during 2015-16 versus Rs. 9564.77 crore during 2014-15. The top 5 sectors in terms of CSR expenditure from 2014-15 to 2016-17 were 1. Education/ Differently Abled/ Livelihood, 2. Health/ Eradicating Hunger/ Poverty and malnutrition/ Safe drinking water / Sanitation, 3. Rural development, 4. Other Sectors (Technology Incubator and Benefits to Armed Forces, Admin Overheads and others) and 5. Environment, Animal Welfare, Conservation of Resources.

The CSR expenditure was Rs. 1605.05 crore for ‘Education/ Differently Abled/ Livelihood’ sector during 2016-17 (up to 30.11.2017). Annual growth of 55.22% has been observed in CSR expenditure for ‘Education/ Differently Abled/ Livelihood’ sector from Rs. 3021.47 crore during 2014-15 to Rs. 4689.81 crore during 2015-16. The CSR expenditure was Rs. 1201.37 crore for ‘Health/ Eradicating Hunger/ Poverty and malnutrition/ Safe drinking water / Sanitation’ sector during 2016-17 (up to 30.11.2017). We have observed annual growth of 81.77% in CSR expenditure for ‘Health/ Eradicating Hunger/ Poverty and malnutrition/ Safe drinking water / Sanitation’ sector from Rs. 2382.27 crore during 2014-15 to Rs. 4330.21 crore during 2015-16. The CSR expenditure was Rs. 628.56 crore for ‘Rural development’ sector during 2016-17 (up to 30.11.2017). The CSR expenditure for ‘Rural development’ sector was Rs. 1327.57 crore during 2015-16, up by 28.76% from Rs. 1031.02 crore during 2014-15.

The CSR expenditure was Rs. 391.57 crore for ‘Other (Technology Incubator and Benefits to Armed Forces, Admin Overheads and others)’ sector during 2016-17 (up to 30.11.2017). We have observed annual decline of -15.07% in CSR expenditure for ‘Other (Technology Incubator and Benefits to Armed Forces, Admin Overheads and others)’ sector to Rs. 1099.24 crore during 2015-16 from Rs. 1294.24 crore during 2014-15. The CSR expenditure was Rs. 306.68 crore for ‘Environment, Animal Welfare, Conservation of Resources’ sector during 2016-17 (up to 30.11.2017). Annual growth of 11.02% has been seen in CSR expenditure for ‘Environment, Animal Welfare, Conservation of Resources’ sector from Rs. 812.31 crore during 2014-15 to Rs. 901.8 crore during 2015-16.
