The top 10 states with respect to production of onion during 2017-18 were Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat, Bihar, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh.
Onion production in Maharashtra was 6656 thousand metric tonne (MT) during 2017-18, down by -1.17% versus 6734.74 thousand MT during 2016-17. Annual decline of -91 basis points has been observed in production of onion in Madhya Pradesh from 3721.61 thousand MT during 2016-17 to 3687.9 thousand MT during 2017-18. Onion production in Karnataka was 3049.48 thousand MT in 2016-17. It has decreased by -15.84% to 2566.43 thousand MT during 2017-18 over 2016-17.
We have seen annual growth of 100 basis points in production of onion in Gujarat to 1303.07 thousand MT during 2017-18 against 1290.17 thousand MT during 2016-17. Onion production in Bihar was 1248.96 thousand MT in each year during 2016-17 & 2017-18.
During 2017-18, onion production in Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh was 1211.75, 965.12, 905.8, 632.75 and 439.64 thousand MT respectively. Annual growth of 5.43%, 5.31%, 32.63%, 35.94% and 2.97% has been found in production of onion in Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh respectively during 2017-18 above 2016-17.
