Top 10 States/UTs with respect to Cotton and Manmade Textiles Workers as on March 2019

The Indian textile industry is the second largest manufacturer and exporter in the world. The Textile industry holds importance from the employment point of view as well. It employs people directly and people in allied sectors, including a large number of women and rural population.

The top 10 States/UTs in terms of number of cotton and manmade textiles workers employed as on March 2019 were Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and Haryana.

The number of cotton and manmade textiles workers was 282607 in 2032 mills of Tamil Nadu as on March 2019, which accounted 28.43% of the total cotton and manmade textiles workers employed in India. There were 116379 cotton and manmade textiles workers employed in 150 mills of Gujarat as on March, 2019. It accounted 11.71% of the total cotton and manmade textiles workers working in India as on the same period. The number of cotton and manmade textiles workers was 116307 in 285 mills of Maharashtra as on March 2019, which accounted 11.7% of the total cotton and manmade textiles workers employed in India.

There were 84251 and 75610 cotton and manmade textiles workers employed in Rajasthan and Punjab respectively as on March 2019. Rajasthan accounted for 8.47% and Punjab accounted for 7.61% of the total cotton and manmade textiles workers employed in India as on March 2019.

The number of cotton and manmade textiles workers employed in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and Haryana was 68124, 54772, 43039, 32746 and 16149 respectively as on March 2019. These above mentioned top 10 states accounted for 89.52% of the total cotton and manmade textiles workers employed in India as a whole as on March 2019.
