The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) provides at least one hundred days of guaranteed wage employment in every financial year to every rural household whose adult members volunteer to do unskilled manual work. It is a demand driven wage employment programme. The Government is actively engaged with the State Government in establishing systems that ensure provision of work as per demand on field.
The top 10 States/UTs with respect to average days of employment provided per household under MGNREGS during 2018-19 were Mizoram, West Bengal, Meghalaya, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan, Sikkim and Himachal Pradesh. These top 10 States/UTs were found above the national average of 51 days of employment provided per household under MGNREGS during 2018-19.
The average days of employment provided per household was 92 in Mizoram under MGNREGS during 2018-19, up by 21.05% against 76 during 2017-18. The number of average days of employment provided per household was 60 in West Bengal under MGNREGS during 2017-18. It has surged by 28.33% to 77 during 2018-19 above 2017-18. The average days of employment provided per household was 72 in Meghalaya under MGNREGS during 2018-19, up by 5.88% versus 68 during 2017-18.
During 2018-19, there were 66, 58, 57, 57, 57, 54 and 52 average days of employment provided per household under MGNREGS in Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan, Sikkim and Himachal Pradesh respectively.
