Top 10 States/UTs with high Neonatal Mortality Rate during 2016

Neonatal Mortality Rate is defined as number of Neonatal deaths per 1000 live births, and a Neonatal death is defined as a death during the first 28 days of life (0-27 days). During 2016, Neonatal Mortality Rate of India was 24 per 1000 live births. Neonatal Mortality Rate was 27/1000 live births in rural areas of India and 14/1000 live births in urban areas of India in the year 2016. The top 10 States/UTs with high Neonatal Mortality Rate during 2016 were Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Assam and Haryana.

Among these top 10 States/UTs, seven states have been found above India’s Neonatal Mortality Rate (24) in 2016. Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Bihar and Chhattisgarh had Neonatal Mortality Rate of 32, 32, 30, 30, 28, 27 and 26 respectively per 1000 live births during 2016. Rest three, i.e., Andhra Pradesh, Assam and Haryana were seen below the India’s Neonatal Mortality Rate with 23, 23 and 22 respectively in 2016.

The top 3 States/UTs with low Neonatal Mortality Rate during 2016 were Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Delhi. Kerala have been observed with least Neonatal Mortality Rate of 6/1000 live births followed by Tamil Nadu and Delhi with 12 each in the year 2016.
