Ministry of Human Resource Development had initiated an All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) in 2011 to prepare a sound database on Higher Education in the country. The survey covers all the institutions in the country engaged in imparting the higher education. A rich database has been built from the data collected under AISHE and it is getting updated from the annual data submitted by the institutions.
The Top 5 State/UTs having the maximum number of UGC recognised institutions/colleges in 2012-13 were: Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu. Maharashtra had 2992 UGC recognised institutions/colleges, accounting for 22.64% of total UGC recognised institutions/colleges in India. Uttar Pradesh had 1891 UGC recognised institutions/colleges, accounting for 14.31% of total UGC recognised institutions/colleges in India.Karnataka had 1492 UGC recognised institutions/colleges, accounting for 11.29% of total UGC recognised institutions/colleges in India. Gujarat had 844 UGC recognised institutions/colleges, accounting for 6.39% of total UGC recognised institutions/colleges in India. Tamil Nadu had 729 UGC recognised institutions/colleges, accounting for 5.52% of total UGC recognised institutions/colleges in India.
The 5 State/UTs having the least number of recognised institutions/colleges in 2012-13 were: Sikkim with 7 UGC recognised institutions/colleges (0.05% of All India); Andaman & Nicobar Islands with 2 UGC recognised institutions/colleges (0.02% of All India); Dadra & Nagar Haveli with 2 UGC recognised institutions/colleges (0.02% of All India); Daman & Diu with 1 UGC recognised institutions/colleges (0.01% of All India) and Lakshadweep with 1 UGC recognised institutions/colleges (0.01% of All India).
