According to NFHS-4, 89.9% households have an improved drinking-water source during 2015-16 in India. Whereas according to NFHS-3, 87.6% households had an improved drinking-water source during 2005-06 in India. According to NFHS-4 report, there were 89.3% and 91.1% households with an improved drinking-water source in rural India and urban India respectively during 2015-16.
The Top 5 States/UTs having highest percentage of households with an improved drinking-water source during 2015-16 are Chandigarh, Punjab, Bihar, Sikkim and Uttar Pradesh. According to NFHS-4, Chandigarh, Punjab, Bihar, Sikkim and Uttar Pradesh have 99.5%, 99.1%, 98.2%, 97.6% and 96.4% respectively households with an improved drinking-water source during 2015-16. According to NFHS-3, Punjab had the highest 99.4% households with an improved drinking-water source during 2005-06.
The Bottom 5 States/UTs having percentage of households with an improved drinking-water source during 2015-16 are Manipur with 41.6%, Meghalaya with 67.9%, Andhra Pradesh with 72.7%, Dadra and Nagar Haveli with 77.5% and Telangana with 77.6%. According to NFHS-3, Manipur had the lowest 52.1% households with an improved drinking-water source during 2005-06.
