India has experienced a tremendous increase in the total number of registered motor vehicles in the last decade, from about 5.4 crores in 2001 to about 14.18 crores in 2011, with the highest number of motor vehicles added in the year 2011 (1.4 crores). Growth in the total number of registered motor vehicles in India was 9.94% (CAGR) between the years 2001 and 2011. Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi and Haryana account for almost 93% of the total registered motor vehicles in 2011, where Maharashtra, alone, has a share of 13%.
