State/UT-wise Teachers working under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan at elementary level as on 31st March 2017

The recruitment, service conditions and deployment of teachers are primarily in the domain of the State Governments and UT Administrations. The Central Government through the flagship programme of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) at elementary level provides assistance to the State Governments and UTs for additional teachers to maintain appropriate Pupil Teacher Ratio as per the prescribed norms for various levels of schooling.

As on 31st March 2017, 4203223 teachers were working in India; out of which 2686882 teachers were working by State Governments and UT Administrations, and 1516341 teachers were working under SSA. The top 5 States/UTs in terms of maximum number of teachers working under SSA at elementary level as on 31st March 2017 were Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

There were 328245 teachers working in Uttar Pradesh under SSA at elementary level as on 31st March 2017. It accounted 21.65% of the total teachers working in India under SSA at elementary level as on 31-03-2017. There were 280488 teachers working in Bihar under SSA at elementary level as on 31st March 2017. It accounted 18.5% of the total teachers working in India under SSA at elementary level as on 31-03-2017. There were 145850 teachers working in West Bengal under SSA at elementary level as on 31st March 2017. It accounted 9.62% of the total teachers working in India under SSA at elementary level as on 31-03-2017.

In Madhya Pradesh, 144372 teachers were working under SSA at elementary level as on 31st March 2017; which accounted 9.52% of the total teachers working in India under SSA at elementary level. In Rajasthan, 108677 teachers were working under SSA at elementary level as on 31st March 2017; which accounted 7.17% of the total teachers working in India under SSA at elementary level.

The above mentioned top 5 states accounted for 66.45% of the total teachers working in India under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan at elementary level as a whole as on 31st March 2017.
