State/UT-wise Suicides in India during 2018

During 2018, there were 1,34,516 suicides in India; out of which 92,114 (68.48%), 42,391 (31.51%) and 11 (0.01%) were male, female and transgender respectively. The top 5 States/UTs with respect to persons committed suicide during 2018 were Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka.

The number of persons committed suicide in Maharashtra was 17,972 during 2018, which accounted 13.36% of the total persons committed suicide in India. Out of 17,972 suicides in Maharashtra; 13,497 (75.1%) were male, 4,474 (24.89%) were female and 1 (0.01%) was transgender. There were 13,896 suicides in Tamil Nadu during 2018. It accounted 10.33% of the total persons committed suicide in India during the same period. Out of 13,896 suicides in Tamil Nadu; 9,179 (66.05%), 4,715 (33.93%) and 2 (0.01%) were male, female and transgender respectively. The number of persons committed suicide in West Bengal was 13,255 during 2018, which accounted 9.85% of the total persons committed suicide in India. Out of 13,255 suicides in West Bengal; 7,830 (59.07%) were male, 5,425 (40.93%) were female and 0 was transgender.

There were 11,775 and 11,561 suicides in Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka respectively during 2018. Madhya Pradesh accounted for 8.75% and Karnataka accounted for 8.59% of the total persons committed suicide in India during 2018.

These aforementioned top 5 states accounted for 50.89% of the total persons committed suicide in India as a whole during 2018.
