State/UT-wise Suicides in India due to Family Problems during 2018

During 2018, there were 134,516 suicides in India; out of which 40,935 (30.43%) were due to family problems. Out of 40,935 suicides due to family problems during 2018; 26,975 (65.9%), 13,959 (34.1%) and 1 (0.002%) were male, female and transgender respectively. The top 5 States/UTs with respect to persons committed suicide due to family problems during 2018 were Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal and Kerala.

The number of persons committed suicide due to family problems was 6,433 in Tamil Nadu during 2018, which accounted 15.72% of the total persons committed suicide due to family problems in India. Out of 6,433 suicides in Tamil Nadu; 4,052 (62.98%) were male, 2,380 (37%) were female and 1 (0.02%) was transgender. There were 6,072 suicides due to family problems in Maharashtra during 2018. It accounted 14.83% of the total persons committed suicide due to family problems in India during the same period. Out of 6,072 suicides in Maharashtra; 4,115 (66.77%), 1,957 (32.23%) and 0 were male, female and transgender respectively. The number of persons committed suicide due to family problems was 3,649 in Madhya Pradesh during 2018, which accounted 8.91% of the total persons committed suicide due to family problems in India. Out of 3,649 suicides in Madhya Pradesh; 2,195 (60.15%) were male, 1,454 (39.85%) were female and 0 was transgender.

There were 3,331 and 3,213 suicides due to family problems in West Bengal and Kerala respectively during 2018. West Bengal accounted for 8.14% and Kerala accounted for 7.85% of the total persons committed suicide due to family problems in India during 2018.

These aforementioned top 5 states accounted for 55.45% of the total persons committed suicide due to family problems in India as a whole during 2018.
