State/UT-wise Road Accidents on National Highways from 2015 to 2018

In India, the number of road accidents on National Highways was 1,41,466 and 1,40,843 during 2017 and 2018 respectively. It has annually decreased by -63 basis points in 2017 and -44 basis points in 2018. The top 5 States/UTs with respect to road accidents on National Highways during 2018 were Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.

The number of road accidents on National Highways in Tamil Nadu was 19,583 during 2018, down by -5.38% versus 20,696 during 2017. There were 14,333 road accidents on National Highways in Uttar Pradesh during 2017. It has increased by 13.01% to 16,198 during 2018 above 2017. We have observed decline of -4.07% in road accidents on National Highways in Karnataka from 14,217 during 2017 to 13,638 during 2018. Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka accounted for 13.9%, 11.5% and 9.68% respectively of the total road accidents on National Highways in India during 2018.

During 2018, there were 9,967 and 9,355 road accidents on National Highways in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra respectively. Annual decline of -10.61% has been seen in Madhya Pradesh and growth of 128 basis points has been found in Maharashtra during 2018 against 2017 in terms of road accidents on National Highways.

These aforementioned top 5 states accounted for 48.81% of the total road accidents on National Highways in India as a whole during 2018.

Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Daman & Diu and Lakshadweep has been observed with 0 (zero) road accidents on National Highways during 2018 among the States/UTs in India.
