State/UT-wise Road Accidents in Rural Areas in India during 2018

Road accidents occur due to multiple causes. Some of the causes are use of mobile phone, drunken driving/ consumption of alcohol/ drug, overloaded vehicle, poor light condition, jumping red light, over speeding, overtaking, neglect of civic bodies, weather condition, driving on wrong side, defect in road condition, defect in condition of motor vehicle, fault of cyclist and fault of pedestrian etc.

There were 467,044 road accidents in India during 2018; out of which 276,088 (59.11%) were in rural areas and 190,956 (40.89%) were in urban areas in India. The top 5 States/UTs with respect to road accidents in rural areas during 2018 were Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh.

The number of road accidents in rural areas in Tamil Nadu was 39,442 during 2018, which accounted 14.29% of the total road accidents in rural areas of India. There were 28,939 road accidents in rural areas in Madhya Pradesh during 2018. It accounted 10.48% of the total road accidents in rural areas of India during the same period. The number of road accidents in rural areas of Kerala was 26,869 during 2018, which accounted 9.73% of the total road accidents in rural areas of India.

During 2018, there were 24,423 and 22,840 road accidents in rural areas in Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh respectively. Karnataka accounted for 8.85% and Uttar Pradesh accounted for 8.27% of the total road accidents in rural areas of India during 2018.
