Road accidents occur due to multiple causes. Some of the causes are use of mobile phone, drunken driving/ consumption of alcohol/ drug, overloaded vehicle, poor light condition, jumping red light, over speeding, overtaking, neglect of civic bodies, weather condition, driving on wrong side, defect in road condition, defect in condition of motor vehicle, fault of cyclist and fault of pedestrian etc.
There were 151,417 persons killed in road accidents in India during 2018; out of which 51,379 (33.93%) were killed in urban areas and 100,038 (66.07%) were killed in rural areas in India. The top 5 States/UTs with respect to persons killed in road accidents in urban areas during 2018 were Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh.
The number of persons killed in road accidents in urban areas in Uttar Pradesh was 9,823 during 2018, which accounted 19.12% of the total persons killed in road accidents in urban areas of India. There were 4,209 persons killed in road accidents in urban areas in Tamil Nadu during 2018. It accounted 8.19% of the total persons killed in road accidents in urban areas of India during the same period. The number of persons killed in road accidents in urban areas of Maharashtra was 3,996 during 2018, which accounted 7.78% of the total persons killed in road accidents in urban areas of India.
During 2018, there were 3,530 and 3,084 persons killed in road accidents in urban areas in Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh respectively. Karnataka accounted for 6.87% and Madhya Pradesh accounted for 6% of the total persons killed in road accidents in urban areas of India during 2018.
