State/UT-wise Cognizable IPC Crime rate in India during 2016

During 2016, there were a total of 2975711 incidents and 3072460 victims with crime rate of 233.6 reported under Cognizable IPC Crimes in India. The top 5 States/UTs in terms of highest Cognizable IPC Crime rate during 2016 were; Delhi, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana and Assam.

Among these top 5 States/UTs, Delhi had maximum Cognizable IPC Crime rate of 975 during 2016; followed by Kerala with 727.5, Madhya Pradesh with 337.9, Haryana with 320.6 and Assam with 313.8. In Delhi, there were 209519 incidents and 213548 victims of Cognizable IPC Crimes reported during 2016. In Kerala, there were 260097 incidents and 239680 victims of Cognizable IPC Crimes reported during 2016.

There were 264418 incidents and 275689 victims of Cognizable IPC Crimes reported in Madhya Pradesh during 2016. There were 88527 incidents and 89282 victims of Cognizable IPC Crimes reported in Haryana during 2016. There were 102250 incidents and 103334 victims of Cognizable IPC Crimes reported in Assam during 2016.

The bottom 5 States/UTs in terms of Cognizable IPC Crime rate during 2016 were; Lakshadweep, D&N Haveli, Nagaland, Daman & Diu and Uttarakhand with Crime rate of 45, 56.7, 57.6, 82.1 and 101.8 respectively.

Note: I: Incidents; V: Victims; R: Crime Rate; *: Rate of gender specific (Women) crime has been worked out using female population; **: Includes Rape in Police Station/Jail/Hospital under whom Victims were in Custody; ***: Cases of Simple Hurt, Assault, Abetment of Suicide and Attempt to Suicide cases are not reflected as the heads were clubbed under ‘Other IPC Crimes’; ****: Other Rioting includes Previous Enmity, Family Disputes, Heated Arguments, Riot due to Power Supply, Riot due to Civil Dispute and Attack on Police etc; *****: Affray (Sec.160 IPC) is included in Other IPC Cases; ******: Excludes Snatching and Receiver of Stolen Property cases which have been clubbed in ‘Other IPC Crimes’; *******: May include cases under Abetment of suicide, Simple Hurt, Snatching, Assault on public servant, Affray, Public safety, tresspass, Mischief and Receiving Stolen Property etc.
