In total there were 2303 rural bank branches opened by commercial banks in India during 2015-16, down by -28.9% versus 3241 rural branches opened during 2014-15. We have observed annual decline of -38.5% in rural bank branches opened by commercial banks to 1417 during 2016-17 above 2015-16. The number of rural bank branches opened by commercial banks in India was 380 during 2017-18 (till 30th September 2017). The top 5 States/UTs in terms of rural bank branches opened by commercial banks during 2017-18 (till 30th Sep 2017) were Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh.
The number of rural bank branches opened in Rajasthan was 51 during 2017-18, which accounted 13.42% of the total rural bank branches opened in India during the same period. Annual de-growth of -40.7% has been seen in rural bank branches opened in Rajasthan during 2017-18 against 86 branches during 2016-17. There were 44 rural bank branches opened in Uttar Pradesh during 2017-18. It accounted 11.58% of the total rural bank branches opened in India during 2017-18. We have observed annual decline of -75.8% in rural bank branches opened in Uttar Pradesh during 2017-18 from 182 branches during 2016-17. The number of rural bank branches opened in Tamil Nadu was 42 during 2017-18, which accounted 11.05% of the total rural bank branches opened in India during the same period. Annual decline of -72% has been seen in rural bank branches opened in Tamil Nadu during 2017-18 versus 150 branches during 2016-17.
There were 28 and 27 rural bank branches opened in Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh respectively during 2017-18. Maharashtra accounted for 7.37% and Andhra Pradesh accounted for 7.11% of the total rural bank branches opened in India during 2017-18. Annual de-growth of -61.6% and 74% has been found in rural bank branches opened in Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh respectively during 2017-18 above 2016-17.
The above mentioned top 5 States/UTs accounted for 50.53% of the total rural bank branches opened by commercial banks in India as a whole during 2017-18 (till 30th September 2017).
