Public Sector Banks (PSBs) with CASA Deposits of more than 35% as of March 2014

February 10, 2015

Current Accounts Savings Accounts (CASA) Deposits are very important performance factors for the Banks. The rates of interest paid to the customers by the bank on CASA Deposits are very low i.e. NIL interest on Current Accounts and mere 4% rate of interest on Savings Accounts. This brings down the overall cost of funds of the bank and gives them a lot of manoeuvrability to give credit/loans at lower rates and still earn a good Net Interest Margin (NIM) and profitability. Each bank strives to ensure that CASA Deposits form a high percentage share in the total deposits of the bank.

Public Sector Banks (PSBs) with CASA Deposits forming more than 35% share in the total deposits (domestic) of the bank as of March 2014 in India are: State Bank of India (44.43% CASA Deposits as a percentage of the total deposits as of March, 2014); Punjab National Bank (41.21% CASA Deposits as a percentage of the total deposits as of March, 2014); State Bank of Bikaner & Jaipur (39.51% CASA Deposits as a percentage of the total deposits as of March, 2014); United Bank (36.98% CASA Deposits as a percentage of the total deposits as of March, 2014) and Bank of Maharashtra (35.89% CASA Deposits as a percentage of the total deposits as of March, 2014).

State Bank of India has seen a decrease in the CASA % share by -2.21 percentage points as compared to March, 2012; United Bank has seen a decrease in the CASA % share by -3.82 percentage points as compared to March, 2012 and Bank of Maharashtra has seen a decrease in the CASA % share by -5.44 percentage points as compared to March, 2012. While Punjab National Bank has shown an increase in the CASA % share by 5.91 percentage points as compared to March, 2012 and State Bank of Bikaner & Jaipur has shown an increase in the CASA % share by 2.17 percentage points as compared to March, 2012. However, it has to be kept in mind that static or low total deposits growth may also boost CASA % share.
