The area afforested was 493 thousand hectares during the year 2007-08. The cumulative area afforested since the first Five Year Plan Period (1951-56) grew to 37523 thousand hectares in 2007-08.
The area afforested was 173 thousand hectares during the year 2008-09. It decreased by -320 thousand hectares as compared to 2007-08. In percentage terms, the decrease was -64.91%. The cumulative area afforested grew to 37696 thousand hectares in 2008-09. The area afforested was 104 thousand hectares during the year 2009-10. It decreased by -69 thousand hectares as compared to 2008-09. In percentage terms, the decrease was -39.88%. The cumulative area afforested grew to 37800 thousand hectares in 2009-10.
The area afforested was 57 thousand hectares during the year 2010-11. It decreased by -47 thousand hectares as compared to 2009-10. In percentage terms, the decrease was -45.19%. The cumulative area afforested grew to 37857 thousand hectares in 2010-11.The area afforested was 141 thousand hectares during the year 2011-12. It increased by 84 thousand hectares as compared to 2010-11. In percentage terms, the increase was 147.37%. The cumulative area afforested grew to 37998 thousand hectares in 2011-12.The area afforested was 56 thousand hectares during the year 2012-13. It decreased by -85 thousand hectares as compared to 2011-12. In percentage terms, the decrease was -60.28%. The cumulative area afforested grew to 38054 thousand hectares in 2012-13.
The area afforested was 81 thousand hectares during the year 2013-14. It increased by 25 thousand hectares as compared to 2012-13. In percentage terms, the increase was 44.64%. The cumulative area afforested grew to 38135 thousand hectares in 2013-14.The area afforested was 74 thousand hectares during the year 2014-15. It decreased by -7 thousand hectares as compared to 2013-14. In percentage terms, the decrease was -8.64%. The cumulative area afforested grew to 38209 thousand hectares in 2014-15.
The maximum absolute annual growth in area afforested of 84 thousand hectares was recorded in the year 2011-12 during the period under consideration. The maximum annual growth in percentage terms in area afforested of 147.37% was also recorded in the year 2011-12 during the period under consideration.
