Production of Mulberry Silk in India from 2002-03 to 2015-16

Total production of raw silk in India was 16319 metric tonne during 2002-03; out of which 14617 (89.57%) metric tonne was mulberry silk. We have seen a decline of -4.43% in production of mulberry silk to 13970 metric tonne during 2003-04 over the previous year 2002-03. It accounted for 88.74% of total raw silk (15742 metric tonne) produced in India during 2003-04. We have seen a decline of -3.91% in production of mulberry silk from 16245 metric tonne during 2007-08 to 15610 metric tonne during 2008-09. It accounted for 84.98% of total raw silk (18370 metric tonne) produced in India during 2008-09.

We have seen a growth of 4.07% in production of mulberry silk from 18715 metric tonne during 2012-13 to 19476 metric tonne during 2013-14. It accounted for 73.55% of total raw silk (26480 metric tonne) produced in India during 2013-14. We have seen a growth of 9.83% in production of mulberry silk to 21390 metric tonne during 2014-15 over the previous year 2013-14. It accounted for 74.51% of total raw silk (28708 metric tonne) produced in India during 2014-15. We have seen a decline of -4.26% in production of mulberry silk to 20478 metric tonne during 2015-16 over the previous year 2014-15. It accounted for 71.79% of total raw silk (28523 metric tonne) produced in India during 2015-16.

However, there was lots of volatility in production of mulberry silk during 2002-03 to 2015-16. The maximum annual growth in production of mulberry silk of 1914 metric tonne was recorded in the year 2014-15 during the period under consideration. The maximum annual growth in percentage terms in production of mulberry silk of 11.69% was recorded in the year 2011-12 during the period under consideration.
