Prison Inmate Capacity in District Jails at the end of 2014

The total prison inmate capacity of district jails in India was 135439 at the end of the year 2014. The top 10 states in terms of the total prison inmate capacity of district jails were: Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Rajasthan and Assam at the end of the year 2014.

The total prison inmate capacity of district jails in Uttar Pradesh was 43383 at the end of the year 2014. It accounted for 32.03% of the total prison inmate capacity of district jails in India at the end of the year 2014.

The total prison inmate capacity of district jails in Bihar was 17892 at the end of the year 2014. It accounted for 13.21% of the total prison inmate capacity of district jails in India at the end of the year 2014.

The total prison inmate capacity of district jails in Haryana was 14044 at the end of the year 2014. It accounted for 10.37% of the total prison inmate capacity of district jails in India at the end of the year 2014.

The total prison inmate capacity of district jails in Madhya Pradesh was 7771 at the end of the year 2014. It accounted for 5.74% of the total prison inmate capacity of district jails in India at the end of the year 2014.

These top 5 states accounted for 66.32% of the total prison inmate capacity of district jails in India as a whole at the end of the year 2014. While deriving inferences from the above mentioned analysis; the fact that these states have more population should be taken into the view.
