Plan wise Addition to National Highway Length (First Plan 1951-56 to Eleventh Plan 2007-12)

National Highways have been a high priority area and constructed on a speedy basis across the country during plan periods. The length of National Highways increased from 22255 Km. at the end of First Plan (1951-56) to 76818 Km. at the end of Eleventh Plan (2007-12). It has increased by 54563 Km. (245.17 %) during the period.

The five year plan wise growth is as follows: The length of National Highways has increased from 22255 Km. at the end of First Plan (1951-56) to 23769 Km. at the end of Second Plan (1956-61) showing an increase of 1514 Km. (6.37%). It further increased to 23948 Km. at the end of Third Plan (1961-66) showing an increase of 179 Km. (0.75%); increased to 28819 Km. at the end of Fourth Plan (1969-74) showing an increase of 4819 Km. (16.72%); increased to 28977 Km. at the end of Fifth Plan (1974-78) showing an increase of 158 Km. (0.55%); increased to 31710 Km. at the end of Sixth Plan (1980-85) showing an increase of 2687 Km. (8.47%); increased to 33612 Km. at the end of Seventh Plan (1985-90) showing an increase of 1902 Km. (5.66%); increased to 34298 Km. at the end of Eighth Plan (1992-97) showing an increase of 609 Km. (1.78%); increased to 58112 Km. at the end of Ninth Plan (1997-2002) showing an increase of 23814 Km. (40.98%); increased to 66590 Km. at the end of Tenth Plan (2002-07) showing an increase of 9008 Km. (13.53%); increased to 76818 Km. at the end of Eleventh Plan (2007-12) showing an increase of 10228 Km. (13.31%).

The highest growth rate in length of National Highways was recorded in Ninth Plan (1997-2002) with increase of 23814 Km. (40.98%). While the lowest growth rate was recorded during the Fifth Plan (1974-78) with increase of 158 Km. (0.55%).
