In May 2016, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MOPNG), introduced the ‘Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana’ (PMUY) as a flagship scheme with an objective to make clean cooking fuel such as LPG available to the rural and deprived households which were otherwise using traditional cooking fuels such as firewood, coal, cow-dung cakes, etc. Usage of traditional cooking fuels had detrimental impacts on the health of rural women as well as on the environment.
There were 2,00,31,618 LPG gas connections that have been released in 2016-17. In 2017-18, a total of 1,55,71,658 LPG gas connections were released followed by 3,62,94,333 in 2018-19 and 82,64,820 in 2019-20.
