The total number of locomotives in service for broad gauge in India as on 31st March 2000-01 was 6672. The number of diesel locomotives was 3881; thus the share of diesel locomotives was 58.17%. The number of electric locomotives was 2791; thus the share of electric locomotives was 41.83%. Total tractive effort was 194844 thousand KGs in 2000-01.
Tractive Effort required to move a train consists of numerous factors, but most important are four namely: first, a force of 2 to 5 pounds per ton of train weight is required to move on straight level track; second, track curvature; third, per cent of grade (the most important factor governing tractive effort: for every ton of train weight in a grade, 20 pounds of tractive effort is needed for each 1% of slope); and fourth, acceleration of the train (about 10 pounds per ton to accelerate to a speed of 6 miles per hour).
The total number of locomotives in service for broad gauge in India as on 31st March 2013-14 was 10055. The number of diesel locomotives was 5232; thus the share of diesel locomotives was 52.03%. The number of electric locomotives was 4823; thus the share of electric locomotives was 47.97%. Total tractive effort was 367583 thousand KGs in 2013-14.
The growth in the number of diesel locomotives for broad gauge in India during the period 2000-01 to 2013-14 was 1351; thus it recorded a percentage growth of 34.81%. The growth in the number of electric locomotives for broad gauge in India during the period 2000-01 to 2013-14 was 2032; thus it recorded a percentage growth of 72.81%.
