Interest, Subsidies and Defence Expenditure of Indian Government from 2000-01 to 2015-16

The Government of India incur expenditure on various items. The major items of the expenditure in Indian Government budget are: interest payments, subsidies and defence expenditure.

The expenditure on Interest Payments by the Government of India was Rs. 99314 crores during the year 2000-01. It increased to Rs. 456145 crores during the year 2015-16 (BE) showing an increase of Rs. 356831 crores during the period from 2000-01 to 2015-16. In percentage terms, the overall growth was 359.3% during the period. The annual rate of growth in percentage terms was 23.95% during the period from 2000-01 to 2015-16.

The expenditure on Major Subsidies by the Government of India was Rs. 25860 crores during the year 2000-01. It increased to Rs. 243811 crores during the year 2015-16 (BE) showing an increase of Rs. 217951 crores during the period from 2000-01 to 2015-16. In percentage terms, the overall growth was 842.81% during the period. The annual rate of growth in percentage terms was 56.19% during the period from 2000-01 to 2015-16.

Defence Expenditure of the Government of India was Rs. 37238 crores during the year 2000-01. It increased to Rs. 152139 crores during the year 2015-16 (BE) showing an increase of Rs. 114901 crores during the period from 2000-01 to 2015-16. In percentage terms, the overall growth was 308.56% during the period. The annual rate of growth in percentage terms was 20.57% during the period from 2000-01 to 2015-16.
