Infant Mortality Rate – Target XIIth Five Year Plan

November 22, 2013

The Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) for 19 States and 7 UTs out of the 35 States/UTs in India have an IMR less than the all India figure of 44 per thousand in 2011.

While, Goa and Manipur have the lowest IMR of 11 each followed by Kerala with IMR 12, the highest IMR of 59 was observed for Madhya Pradesh.

The 11th Five Year Plan required the all India IMR to be reduced by 15 per cent every year – target being 28 per thousand, 12th Five Year Plan would require it to be reduced by 12% approximately each year in the plan period. Concentrated efforts in states like U.P., Bihar, Orissa, Assam and Haryana may help in achieving the proposed targets.
