Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) by Place of Residence in India during 1990-2012

India witnessed a declining trend in the Infant mortality rate in rural and urban areas. In rural areas, Infant mortality rate has declined by 47% from 86 in 1990 to 46 in 2012 and declined by 44% from 50 in 1990 to 28 in 2012 in urban areas.
A consistent decreasing trend has been observed from 1991 onward in rural areas while it was observed from 2004 onward in urban area.

Rural infants continue to experience a higher mortality than urban infants. Still in 2012, 1 in every 24 children die within one year of birth at National level, 1 in every 22 children in rural area and 1 in every 36 children in urban area.

Note: IMR measures number of infant (<1 year) deaths per 1000 live births.
