The Indian Shipping has shown good growth from the year 1951 to the year 2014 in terms of Gross Registered Tonnage (GRT). Gross Registered Tonnage (GRT) applies to the vessel and not to cargo. It is the weight of the volume occupied by the closed in space of a ship taking 100 cubic feet of such closed in spaces as equivalent to one vessel tonne. It thus refers to the cubic capacity of the vessels.
The total Gross Registered Tonnage (GRT) of Indian Fleet was 391 tonnes with the average GRT amounting to 3.8 tonnes in the year 1951.
The total GRT of Indian Fleet was 901 tonnes with the average GRT amounting to 5.2 tonnes in the year 1961.The total GRT increased by 510 tonnes (130.43%) as compared to the year 1951 with the average GRT increasing by 1.4 tonnes (36.84%). The total GRT of Indian Fleet was 2500 tonnes with the average GRT amounting to 9.8 tonnes in the year 1971.The total GRT increased by 1599 (177.47%) as compared to the year 1961 with the average GRT increasing by 4.6 tonnes (88.46%). The total GRT of Indian Fleet was 5889 tonnes with the average GRT amounting to 14.6 tonnes in the year 1981.The total GRT increased by 3389 tonnes (135.56%) as compared to the year 1971 with the average GRT increasing by 4.8 tonnes (48.98%). The total GRT of Indian Fleet was 5939 tonnes with the average GRT amounting to 14.3 tonnes in the year 1991.The total GRT increased by 50 tonnes (0.85%) as compared to the year 1981 with the average GRT decreasing by -0.3 tonnes (-2.05%).
The total GRT of Indian Fleet was 6968 tonnes with the average GRT amounting to 12.5 tonnes in the year 2001.The total GRT increased by 1029 tonnes (17.33%) as compared to the year 1991 with the average GRT decreasing by -1.8 tonnes (-12.59%). The total GRT of Indian Fleet was 11061 tonnes with the average GRT amounting to 9.9 tonnes in the year 2011.The total GRT increased by 4093 tonnes (58.74%) as compared to the year 2001 with the average GRT decreasing by -2.6 tonnes (-20.8%). The total GRT of Indian Fleet was 10309 tonnes with the average GRT amounting to 8.6 tonnes in the year 2014.The total GRT decreased by -752 tonnes (-6.8%) as compared to the year 2011 with the average GRT decreasing by -1.3 tonnes (-13.13%).
