The Human Development Index (HDI) is a simple composite measure of human development that evaluates development not only by economic advances but also by improvements in human well-being. It is a composite statistic of life expectancy, education, and income indices used to rank countries with regard to human development. It is published by the United Nations Development Programme.
Human Development Index of India was 0.369 in 1980. Human Development Index of the world was 0.559 in 1980. There was a gap of 0.19 points between the Human Development Index of India and Human Development Index of the world. Human Development Index of India was 0.431 in 1990. Human Development Index of the world was 0.597 in 1990. There was a gap of 0.166 points between the Human Development Index of India and Human Development Index of the world. The gap was reduced as compared to the year 1980.
Human Development Index of India increased to 0.483 in 2000. Human Development Index of the world increased to 0.639 in 2000. There was a gap of 0.156 points between the HDI of India and HDI of world, showing a reduction as compared to the year 1990. Human Development Index of India increased to 0.527 in 2005. Human Development Index of the world increased to 0.667 in 2005. There was a gap of 0.14 points between the HDI of India and HDI of world, showing a reduction as compared to the year 2000.
Human Development Index of India increased to 0.57 in 2010. Human Development Index of the world increased to 0.693 in 2010. There was a gap of 0.123 points between the HDI of India and HDI of world, showing a further reduction as compared to the year 2005. Human Development Index of India increased to 0.609 in 2014. Human Development Index of the world increased to 0.711 in 2014. The gap was reduced to 0.102 points between the HDI of India and HDI of world. Thus, India has improved its HDI considerably from 0.369 in 1980 to 0.609 in 2014 and has also reduced the gap with the HDI of world by a significant amount.
