The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) facilitates and assists States/Union Territories (UTs), through ‘smart cities mission’ to improve urban infrastructure and enhance the quality of life in cities and towns covered under the mission. Smart cities mission was launched with a total central government outlay of Rs. 48,000 crore for developing 100 cities as smart cities.
Total fund of Rs. 9,497.09 crore was utilised under smart cities mission in India during 2015-16 to 2019-20. The top 5 States/UTs with respect to central funds utilised under smart cities mission during 2015-16 to 2019-20 were Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh.
Fund utilised under smart cities mission was Rs. 1,279.3 crore in Tamil Nadu during 2015-16 to 2019-20, which accounted 13.47% of the total fund utilised under smart cities mission in India. There was utilization of Rs. 1,275.83 crore in Madhya Pradesh under smart cities mission during 2015-16 to 2019-20. It accounted 13.43% of the total fund utilised under smart cities mission in India during the same period. The amount of Rs. 1,220.51 crore was utilised under smart cities mission in Andhra Pradesh during 2015-16 to 2019-20, which accounted 12.85% of the total fund utilised under smart cities mission in India.
During 2015-16 to 2019-20, there was utilization of Rs. 988.95 crore and Rs. 816.13 crore in Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh respectively under smart cities mission. Gujarat accounted for 10.41% and Uttar Pradesh accounted for 8.59% of the total fund utilised under smart cities mission in India during 2015-16 to 2019-20.
The number of cities selected under smart cities mission was 12, 7, 4, 6 and 13 from Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh respectively during the period under consideration.
