Functioning Primary Health Centres (PHCs) during Five Year Plans as on 31st March 2014

The number of PHCs in India has increased from 9115 in 1985 (at the end of Sixth Plan) to 25020 as on 31st March 2014 (during Twelfth Plan), showing an addition of 15905 PHCs with overall growth rate of 174.49% during the said period.

The five year plan wise growth is as follows: PHCs increased from 9115 in 1985 (at the end of Sixth Plan) to 18671 in 1990 (at the end of Seventh Plan) showing an addition of 9556 PHCs with overall growth rate of 104.84%. PHCs further increased to 22149 in 1997 (at the end of Eighth Plan) showing an addition of 3478 PHCs with overall growth rate of 18.63%.

PHCs increased to 22875 in 2002 (at the end of Ninth Plan) showing an addition of 726 PHCs with overall growth rate of 3.28%. PHCs declined to 22370 in 2007 (at the end of Tenth Plan) because number of PHCs reported functioning in some States are less as compared to that in 2002 due to upgradation of centres to CHCs. PHCs increased to 24049 in 2012 (at the end of Eleventh Plan) showing an addition of 1679 PHCs with overall growth rate of 7.51%. PHCs increased to 25020 as on 31st March 2014 (during Twelfth Plan: 2012-17) showing an addition of 971 PHCs with overall growth rate of 4.04%.

Note: 1 There is a reduction in the number of Centres functioning at the end of 10th Plan as compared to those functioning at the end of Ninth Plan due to the division of State in case of Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh; 2 There is a reduction in number of Sub Centres and PHCs in Kerala due to Standardization of Health Institutions during 2009 as reported by the State; The number of PHCs reported functioning in some States has reduced as compared to that in 2002 due to upgradation of centres to CHCs.
