For the first time in the history of the country, the Ministry of Jal Shakti has conducted the first-ever census of water bodies in India. The census provides a comprehensive inventory of Rajasthan’s water resources, including natural and man-made water bodies like ponds, tanks, lakes, and more.
Data of the First Census of Water Bodies in Rajasthan is available on data.gov.in website, link for the same is provided below.
About Data:
16,939 water bodies have been enumerated in the state of Rajasthan. Data available on the portal, contains district-wise information of water bodies like water body name, basin name, water body ownership name etc.
Area-wise Analysis
By looking at the statistics, we can say that 99% (16,750) of water bodies are in rural areas and the remaining 1% (189) are in urban areas.
In rural areas, 48% (8,005) water bodies are Ponds, whereas 60% (114) of water bodies in urban areas are Tanks.
District-wise Analysis
It can be observed that in Rajasthan maximum number of water bodies are in Ajmer district having a value of 3,519, which constitutes 21% of overall data out of which 64% are Ponds, followed by, Tonk (value 1,934), Bhilwara (value 1,877), Karauli (value 1470), Bharatpur (value 1315) and Jalore having value 1065. Whereas districts with the minimum number of water bodies are Alwar and Dausa make up 0.01% (value 2) and 0.05% (value 9) respectively of total data.
