Fatal Road Accidents in India during 2015 to 2018

There were 137,726 fatal road accidents in India during 2018, up by 2.17% against 134,796 during 2017. We have seen annual growth of -0.94% and 3.3% in fatal road accidents in India during 2017 & 2016 respectively. The top 5 States/UTs with respect to number of fatal road accidents during 2018 were Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh.

The number of fatal road accidents in Uttar Pradesh was 17,706 in 2017. It has increased by 9.36% to 19,364 during 2018 above 2017. Annual growth of 7.83% has been observed in fatal road accidents in Maharashtra to 12,098 during 2018 from 11,220 during 2017. The number of fatal road accidents in Tamil Nadu was 11,375 during 2018, down by -24.47% versus 15,061 during 2017. Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu accounted for 14.06%, 8.78% and 8.26% respectively of the total fatal road accidents in India during 2018.

During 2018, there were 10,093 and 9,721 fatal road accidents in Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh respectively. Karnataka accounted for 7.33% and Madhya Pradesh accounted for 7.06% of the total fatal road accidents in India during 2018.
