Export of Fish and Fish Products in Tamil Nadu as per SHB 2018

Based on the data published in the Statistical Hand Book (SHB) – 2018 of the Department of Economics and Statistics, Government of Tamil Nadu, the graph arrived, as shown below, clearly exhibits the progress of the export of fish and fish products in terms of quantity and value, in Tamil Nadu during the Period of 2008-09 to 2016-17.

Tamil Nadu is enriched with Marine, Brackishwater and Inland fishery resources amenable for capture and culture fisheries. Substantial focus is being given on the economic and social dimensions of fishery resources by the Government of Tamil Nadu. The Indian Fisheries Act, 1897 enacted by the then Madras Presidency paved the way for the formulation of fisheries legislations across India. The Fisheries sector plays an important role in the socio-economic development of the country by providing livelihood to large number of fishers, generating employment opportunities in allied sectors and ensuring nutritional security.

The Total Fish Production of Tamil Nadu is estimated at 7.12 lakh tonnes during 2017-18. Tamil Nadu ranks 4th in total fish production of the country. Tamil Nadu exported 88,257 MT of marine products and earned a foreign exchange of Rs. 4,341.78 Crore during 2016-17.
