District-wise Forest Cover in Sikkim in 2013

The total forest area in the state of Sikkim in the year 2013 was 3358 square kilometres. The very dense forest area in Sikkim was 500 square kilometres. The moderately dense forest area was 2161 square kilometres. The open forest area was 697 square kilometres. The percentage of geographical area having forests to total geographical area in Sikkim was 47.32%.

The total forest area in East Sikkim district in 2013 was 699 square kilometres. The very dense forest area in East Sikkim district was 162 square kilometres. The moderately dense forest area was 411 square kilometres. The open forest area was 126 square kilometres. The percentage of geographical area having forests to total geographical area in East Sikkim district was 73.27%.

The total forest area in North Sikkim district in 2013 was 1316 square kilometres. The very dense forest area in North Sikkim district was 135 square kilometres. The moderately dense forest area was 890 square kilometres. The open forest area was 291 square kilometres. The percentage of geographical area having forests to total geographical area in North Sikkim district was 31.14%.

The total forest area in South Sikkim district in 2013 was 571 square kilometres. The very dense forest area in South Sikkim district was 93 square kilometres. The moderately dense forest area was 371 square kilometres. The open forest area was 107 square kilometres. The percentage of geographical area having forests to total geographical area in South Sikkim district was 76.13%.

The total forest area in West Sikkim district in 2013 was 772 square kilometres. The very dense forest area in West Sikkim district was 110 square kilometres. The moderately dense forest area was 489 square kilometres. The open forest area was 173 square kilometres. The percentage of geographical area having forests to total geographical area in West Sikkim district was 66.21%.

Thus, in the state of Sikkim in the year 2013, the highest percentage of geographical area having forests to total geographical area was in the district of South Sikkim at 76.13%. On the other hand, the lowest percentage of geographical area having forests to total geographical area was in the district of North Sikkim at 31.14%.
