Capacity and Population of Prison Inmates in Women Jails at the end of 2014

The total prison inmate capacity of women jails in India was 4837 at the end of the year 2014. The total prison inmate population of women jails in India was 3001 at the end of the year 2014. There were 13 States/UTs in India having women jails viz. Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Delhi, Punjab, Kerala, Maharashtra, Telangana, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar and Odisha.

The total prison inmate population of women jails was more than the total prison inmate capacity of women jails in case of Telangana and Delhi. Telangana had 235 prison inmate population against 220 prison inmate capacity of women jails; while Delhi had 602 prison inmate population against 400 prison inmate capacity of women jails.
