To improve the condition of banking sector, Government of India (GoI) announced recapitalisation of Public Sector Banks (PSBs) through infusion of capital by the Government and raising of capital by banks from the markets. Rs. 90,000 crore was infused by the Government in PSBs during the financial year (FY) 2017-18. The top 5 Banks with respect to capital infusion by Government of India during 2017-18 were IDBI Bank Limited, Bank of India, State Bank of India, UCO Bank and Punjab National Bank.
Capital of Rs. 12,471 crore was infused to IDBI Bank Limited by GoI during 2017-18. It accounted 13.86% of the total capital infusion by GoI during the same period. Bank of India infused by Rs. 9,232 crore by GoI during 2017-18, which accounted 10.26% of the total capital infused by the Government. Capital of Rs. 8,800 crore was infused to State Bank of India by GoI during 2017-18. It accounted 9.78% of the total capital infusion by GoI during the same period.
Government of India infused Rs. 6,507 and 5,473 crore as capital to UCO Bank and Punjab National Bank respectivley during the FY 2017-18. UCO Bank accounted for 7.23% and Punjab National Bank accounted for 6.08% of the total capital infused by the Government during 2017-18.
