For the first time in the history of the country, the Ministry of Jal Shakti has conducted the first-ever census of water bodies in India. The census provides a comprehensive inventory of Haryana’s water resources, including natural and man-made water bodies like ponds, tanks, lakes, and more.

About Data:
Data available on the portal, contains district-wise information of water bodies like water body name, basin name, water body ownership name etc.
District-wise Analysis:
It can be observed that in Haryana maximum number of water bodies are in Sirsa district having value 1,260, which constitutes 8.4% of overall data out of which 73% are Ponds, followed by, Palwal (value 1,218), Hissar (value 1,086), Jind (value 1026), Jhajjar (value 994) and Sonepat having value 982. Whereas districts with minimum number of water bodies are Karnal and Panchkula that make up 1.3% (value 200) and 1.4% (value 209) respectively of total data.
Top 10 district in terms of number of water bodies are Sirsa, Palwal, Hissar, Jind, Jhajjar, Sonepat, Mahendragarh, Yamunanagar, Ambala and Rewari which constitutes to 66% of the state’s total water bodies.
Analysis on the Type of Water Bodies:
Given data also provides the information about natural and man-made water bodies like ponds, tanks, lakes etc. It can also be observed that 83% of water bodies are natural whereas 17% are man-made.
As mentioned above, Sirsa has maximum number of water bodies out of which 72% are natural whereas 28% are man-made.
Maximum number of man-made water bodies are in Palwal having value 579, accounting for 48% of total water bodies in the region, however Hissar represents the district with maximum number of natural water bodies having value 1,086 (i.e. 100% of the region).
Bhiwani, Faridabad, Fatehabad, Hissar, Kaithal, Kurukshetra and Rewari are the districts in Haryana with zero man-made water bodies.
