Ajmer: Vehicle Tracking System for better service delivery

Background

In the absence of vehicle tracking, several challenges were faced by the city including vehicle theft, vehicles not arriving on time for door-to-door garbage collection, break-down of vehicles leading to traffic congestion, etc. The city was thus looking for ways to use technology and data for improving city services.

Solution

Ajmer Smart City Limited (ASCL) and the Municipal Corporation Ajmer explored the idea of fitting a GPS device on the vehicles run by the Corporation such as vehicles for garbage collection, trucks run by the Tramway, city buses, etc. GPS devices were fitted into these vehicles, along with fuel sensors. With the cooperation of the Corporation officials, this work was completed.

Data across a total of 80 wards was prepared for this project. In each ward a technical team was assigned to undertake geo fencing exercise and vehicle maps were created. Post this the vehicles live locations were visible on the Dashboard. The data thus collected, is analyzed to identify offline vehicles and uncover any faults with them. Whenever a vehicle is offline on the dashboard, the technical team goes to the field to identify the core problem. In our past experience, there have been instances like dead battery, tyre issues, wiring problems, etc. Relevant information is relayed to the Municipal officer’s on a regular basis and the vehicles are repaired by the Corporation. This timely intervention helps maintain the daily frequency and timing of vehicles.

Further, a citizen app was launched for providing an interface to the people and has proved very useful for Ajmer citizens as well as tourists. The App highlights which garbage collection vehicle will go to which locations in the ward. It also notifies the user when the garbage collection vehicle is within 2 km of their location. Along with that, users can track the location of public buses. Further, the App shows the current location of the bus, as well as what time it will be available at a given stand. The fare list of each route is also attached. Moreover on this app, you can see all the information related to Indira rasoi, Public Park, Parking, Toilet, Ashraya Sthal, Swachhata App, municipal Corporation related works.

Benefits/Outcomes

Through this project, the Ajmer city administration as well as the citizens are reaping benefits. The GPS helps the administration keep track of the municipal vehicles and undertake timely interventions in case of any issues. The tracking is helpful for citizens to plan their journeys as well as manage their garbage collection. This helps in saving time as well as better planning.
