Zone-wise Funds Allocated for Railway Track Renewal from 2014-15 to 2017-18

Railway track renewal is an ongoing process which is undertaken as and when a stretch of track becomes due for renewal on age/condition basis. Railway track renewal works are planned in advance every year and their execution is prioritized according to the condition of track ensuring all the time that track is in a sound condition for safe running of trains.

Total funds allocated for railway track renewal was Rs. 5024.24 crore during 2014-15. It has increased by 7.88% to Rs. 5420.3 crore during 2015-16 over 2014-15. We have observed annual growth of 47.68% in funds allocated for railway track renewal to Rs. 9943.63 crore during 2017-18 versus Rs. 6733.45 crore during 2016-17. The top 5 railway zones in terms of funds allocated for railway track renewal during 2017-18 were Northern, Southern, Central, East Coast and Western zone.

Funds allocated for railway track renewal of Northern zone was Rs. 1400.7 crore during 2017-18, up by 79.58% from Rs. 780 crore during 2016-17. Northern zone accounted 14.09% of the total funds allocated for railway track renewal during 2017-18. We have seen annual growth of 113.43% in funds allocated for railway track renewal of Southern zone from Rs. 499.48 crore during 2016-17 to Rs. 1066.02 crore during 2017-18. Southern zone accounted 10.72% of the total funds allocated for railway track renewal during 2017-18. Funds allocated for railway track renewal of Central zone was Rs. 808.66 crore during 2017-18, up by 56.81% from Rs. 515.7 crore during 2016-17. Central zone accounted 8.13% of the total funds allocated for railway track renewal during 2017-18.

We have seen annual growth of 222.6% in funds allocated for railway track renewal of East Coast zone from Rs. 229.05 crore during 2016-17 to Rs. 738.92 crore during 2017-18. East Coast zone accounted 7.43% of the total funds allocated for railway track renewal during 2017-18. Funds allocated for railway track renewal of Western zone was Rs. 712.54 crore during 2017-18, up by 38.63% from Rs. 514 crore during 2016-17. Western zone accounted 7.17% of the total funds allocated for railway track renewal during 2017-18.
