Utilization (%) performance of East Ports in India from 2004-05 to 2013-14

India has a coastline spanning of 7516.6 kilometres, forming one of the biggest peninsulas and sixteenth largest maritime country in the world. It is serviced by 13 major ports namely Kolkata, Haldia, Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Ennore, Chennai, Tuticorin, Cochin, N.Mangalore, Mormugoa, J.L.Nehru, Mumbai and Kandla.

The Indian ports and shipping industry plays a vital role in sustaining growth in the country’s trade and commerce which impacts a lot towards county’s GDP. The country’s international trade volumes are growing faster and the trend is expected to continue, which warrant creation of adequate port capacity.

In East side of India there are 3 Major ports namely Kolkata, Haldia and Paradip. In Utilization (%) point of view at Kolkata port, a drastic downward trend seen from 101.53% (2004-05) to 61.35% (2008-09) and an upward trend from 61.35% (2008-09) to 75.09% (2013-14). In 2004-05, Kolkata port had traffic of 9.95 million tonnes and capacity of 9.8 million tonnes. In 2008-09, Kolkata port had traffic of 12.43 million tonnes and capacity of 20.26 million tonnes. In 2013-14 Kolkata port had traffic of 12.87 million tonnes and capacity of 17.14 million tonnes.

In Utilization (%) point of view at Haldia port, a drastic downward trend seen from 106.33% (2004-05) to 71.48% (2009-10) and a gradual downward trend seen from 71.48% (2009-10) to 57.31% (2013-14). In 2004-05, Haldia port had traffic of 36.26 million tonnes and capacity of 34.1 million tonnes. In 2009-10, Haldia port had traffic of 33.38 million tonnes and capacity of 46.7 million tonnes. In 2013-14 Haldia port had traffic of 28.51 million tonnes and capacity of 49.75 million tonnes.

In Utilization (%) point of view at Paradip port, a gradual downward trend seen from 77.18% (2004-05) to 65.37% (2008-09) and a gradual downward trend seen from 65.37% (2008-09) to 62.5% (2013-14). In 2004-05, Paradip port had traffic of 30.1 million tonnes and capacity of 39 million tonnes. In 2008-09, Paradip port had traffic of 46.41 million tonnes and capacity of 71 million tonnes. In 2013-14 Paradip port had traffic of 68 million tonnes and capacity of 108.38 million tonnes.
