State/UT-wise Drowning Deaths in India during 2015

During 2015, there were 29822 Un-Natural deaths reported in India due to Drowning. Out of these 29822 drowning deaths; the number of males, females and transgenders were 23163 (77.67%), 6654 (22.31%) and 5 (0.02%) respectively. The drowning deaths had a weightage of 8.9% out of the total number of Un-Natural deaths (336051) during 2015. The top 5 States/UTs in terms of number of drowning deaths during 2015 were: Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Gujarat.

The number of drowning deaths reported in Madhya Pradesh was 4681 during 2015, which accounted 15.7% of total drowning deaths reported in India during the year. Out of these 4681 drowning deaths; 3391 (72.44%) were male, 1289 (27.54%) were female and 1 (0.02%) were transgender. The number of drowning deaths reported in Maharashtra was 4395 during 2015, which accounted 14.74% of total drowning deaths reported in India during the year. Out of these 4395 drowning deaths; 3438 (78.23%) were male, 957 (21.77%) were female and 0 (0%) were transgender. The number of drowning deaths reported in Tamil Nadu was 2159 during 2015, which accounted 7.24% of total drowning deaths reported in India during the year. Out of these 2159 drowning deaths; 1724 (79.85%) were male, 435 (20.15%) were female and 0 (0%) were transgender.

The number of drowning deaths reported in Karnataka was 2154 during 2015, which accounted 7.22% of total drowning deaths reported in India during the year. Out of these 2154 drowning deaths; 1561 (72.47%) were male, 593 (27.53%) were female and 0 (0%) were transgender. The number of drowning deaths reported in Gujarat was 1923 during 2015, which accounted 6.45% of total drowning deaths reported in India during the year. Out of these 1923 drowning deaths; 1575 (81.9%) were male, 348 (18.1%) were female and 0 (0%) were transgender.

The above mentioned top 5 states accounted for 51.34% of the total drowning deaths reported in India as a whole during 2015.

The 3 States/UTs namely Nagaland, Lakshadweep and Chandigarh having less than 5 drowning deaths reported during 2015. During 2015, there were 4 drowning deaths reported in Nagaland followed by Lakshadweep with 2 and Chandigarh with 1.
