Wholesale price index comprises as far as possible all transactions at first point of bulk sale in the domestic market and released by Office of the Economic Advisor, M/o Commerce and Industries. The current series consists of 102 Primary Articles, 19 Fuel and Power items, and 555 Manufactured Products covering all important items transacted in the economy. The weighing diagram for the WPI series has been derived on the basis of Gross Value of Output. The price data are collected on a self-disclosure basis from individual private sector firms and official sources. National Sample Survey Office also facilitates collection of price data from organized manufacturing units. The current series of Wholesale Price Index has 2011-12 as Base Year. Under Fuel and Power there are 3 categories of commodities named A. Coal, B. Mineral Oils and C. Electricity.
Coal has a weightage of 2.13813 in Wholesale Price Index. The Wholesale Price Index of Coal increased from 113.5 points in the month of January 2017 to 116.6 points in the month of May 2017. It has shown total increase of 3.1 points in Wholesale Price Index during the period from January 2017 to May 2017. However, there have been inter-month fluctuations in the Wholesale Price Index for Coal during this period; ranging from minimum of 113.5 points in the month of January 2017 to maximum of 116.6 points in the month of May 2017. The monthly average value of the Wholesale Price Index of Coal during this period was 115.72 points.
Mineral Oils have a weightage of 7.94968 in Wholesale Price Index. The Wholesale Price Index of Mineral Oils decreased from 81.9 points in the month of January 2017 to 79.3 points in the month of May 2017. It has shown total decrease of 2.6 points in Wholesale Price Index during the period from January 2017 to May 2017. However, there have been inter-month fluctuations in the Wholesale Price Index for Mineral Oils during this period; ranging from minimum of 79.3 points in the month of May 2017 to maximum of 83.9 points in the month of March 2017. The monthly average value of the Wholesale Price Index of Mineral Oils during this period was 81.94 points.
Electricity has a weightage of 3.06409 in Wholesale Price Index. The Wholesale Price Index of Electricity decreased from 107.9 points in the month of January 2017 to 102.7 points in the month of May 2017. It has shown total decrease of 5.2 points in Wholesale Price Index during the period from January 2017 to May 2017. However, there have been inter-month fluctuations in the Wholesale Price Index for Electricity during this period; ranging from minimum of 102.7 points in the month of March and May 2017 to maximum of 107.9 points in the month of January 2017. The monthly average value of the Wholesale Price Index of Electricity during this period was 105.62 points.
