Top 10 States/UTs with Prisoners Serving Life Imprisonment in 2013

The total number of prisoners serving life imprisonment in India in 2013 (at the end of the year) was 70636. The number of male prisoners serving life imprisonment in India in 2013 (at the end of the year) was 67666, while the number of female prisoners serving life imprisonment in India during 2013 (at the end of the year) was 2970.

The top 10 States/UTs with the highest number of prisoners serving life imprisonment in India in 2013 (at the end of the year) were: Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Haryana, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

Uttar Pradesh had 16703 prisoners serving life imprisonment in 2013, which was 23.65% of total prisoners serving life imprisonment in India. The number of male prisoners serving life imprisonment was 16248, while the number of female prisoners serving life imprisonment was 455. Madhya Pradesh had 10925 prisoners serving life imprisonment in 2013, which was 15.47% of total prisoners serving life imprisonment in India. The number of male prisoners serving life imprisonment was 10585, while the number of female prisoners serving life imprisonment was 340. Chhattisgarh had 4380 prisoners serving life imprisonment in 2013, which was 6.2% of total prisoners serving life imprisonment in India. The number of male prisoners serving life imprisonment was 4145, while the number of female prisoners serving life imprisonment was 235.

Maharashtra had 4260 prisoners serving life imprisonment in 2013, which was 6.03% of total prisoners serving life imprisonment in India. The number of male prisoners serving life imprisonment was 4028, while the number of female prisoners serving life imprisonment was 232. Haryana had 3612 prisoners serving life imprisonment in 2013, which was 5.11% of total prisoners serving life imprisonment in India. The number of male prisoners serving life imprisonment was 3391, while the number of female prisoners serving life imprisonment was 221.

Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Lakshadweep had no prisoner serving life imprisonment in India in 2013 (at the end of the year).
