Expenditure for Mid-Day Meal Scheme in 2014-15

Mid Day Meal in schools has had a long history in India. In 1925, a Mid Day Meal Programme was introduced for disadvantaged children in Madras Municipal Corporation.  By 1990-91 the number of States implementing the mid day meal programme with their own resources on a universal or a large scale had increased to twelve states.

With a view to enhancing enrolment, retention and attendance and simultaneously improving nutritional levels among children, the National Programme of Nutritional Support to Primary Education (NP-NSPE) was launched as a Centrally Sponsored Scheme on 15th August 1995, initially in 2408 blocks in the country. By the year 1997-98 the NP-NSPE was introduced in all blocks of the country. From 2008-09 i.e. 1st April, 2008, the programme covers all children studying in Government, Local Body and Government-aided primary and upper primary schools and the EGS/AIE centres including Madarsa and Maqtabs supported under SSA of all areas across the country. 10.45 Cr. children were covered in 11.58 lakh Schools during 2013-14.

The expenditure for Mid-Day Meal scheme in India was Rs. 1131628 lakhs in 2014-15. There were 4 states having expenditure for Mid-Day Meal scheme of more than Rs. 100000 lakhs viz. Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and West Bengal in 2014-15.

The expenditure for Mid-Day Meal scheme in Bihar was Rs. 140647.23 lakhs in 2014-15. It was 12.43% of the expenditure for Mid-Day Meal scheme in India in 2014-15.

The expenditure for Mid-Day Meal scheme in Uttar Pradesh was Rs. 117628.94 lakhs in 2014-15. It was 10.39% of the expenditure for Mid-Day Meal scheme in India in 2014-15. The expenditure for Mid-Day Meal scheme in Maharashtra was Rs. 116062.05 lakhs in 2014-15. It was 10.26% of the expenditure for Mid-Day Meal scheme in India in 2014-15. The expenditure for Mid-Day Meal scheme in West Bengal was Rs. 113916.42 lakhs in 2014-15. It was 10.07% of the expenditure for Mid-Day Meal scheme in India in 2014-15.

There were 5 states having expenditure for Mid-Day Meal scheme between Rs. 50000 lakhs and Rs. 100000 lakhs viz. Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Assam and Odisha in 2014-15.

The expenditure for Mid-Day Meal scheme in Madhya Pradesh was Rs. 76947.5 lakhs in 2014-15 (6.8% of All India). The expenditure for Mid-Day Meal scheme in Tamil Nadu was Rs. 63061.73 lakhs in 2014-15 (5.57% of All India). The expenditure for Mid-Day Meal scheme in Karnataka was Rs. 59165.6 lakhs in 2014-15 (5.23% of All India). The expenditure for Mid-Day Meal scheme in Assam was Rs. 53411.93 lakhs in 2014-15 (4.72% of All India). The expenditure for Mid-Day Meal scheme in Odisha was Rs. 51824.23 lakhs in 2014-15 (4.58% of All India).
