Convicted Prisoners in Jails during 2015

The number of convicted prisoners in jails in India was 134168 at the end of 2015. The top 10 states/UTs in terms of the number of convicted prisoners in jails were: Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Maharashtra, Haryana, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Bihar and Tamil Nadu at the end of 2015.

The number of convicted prisoners in jails in Uttar Pradesh was 25917 at the end of 2015. It accounted for 19.32% of the number of convicted prisoners in jails in India at the end of 2015.

The number of convicted prisoners in jails in Madhya Pradesh was 17058 at the end of 2015. It accounted for 12.71% of the number of convicted prisoners in jails in India at the end of 2015. The number of convicted prisoners in jails in Punjab was 10599 at the end of 2015. It accounted for 7.9% of the number of convicted prisoners in jails in India at the end of 2015.

The number of convicted prisoners in jails in Maharashtra was 7891 at the end of 2015. It accounted for 5.88% of the number of convicted prisoners in jails in India at the end of 2015. The number of convicted prisoners in jails in Haryana was 7780 at the end of 2015. It accounted for 5.8% of the number of convicted prisoners in jails in India at the end of 2015.

These top 5 states accounted for 51.61% of the total number of convicted prisoners in jails in India as a whole at the end of 2015.
