FDI Equity Inflows in Non-conventional Energy Sector from 2007-08 to 2015-16

Foreign direct investment (FDI) is an investment made by an organization/entity in one country in an industrial/business activity in another country. FDI can take place in the form of establishing new business operations from scratch or acquiring existing business assets in the other country. FDI includes mergers and acquisitions, building new facilities, expansion of existing production capacity, etc. FDI usually involves control/participation in management, joint-venture, management expertise and technology transfer. It excludes investment through purchase of securities or foreign portfolio investment, a passive investment in the securities of another country e.g. shares and bonds.

The amount of FDI in Non-conventional Energy sector was $ 58.82 million in 2007-08. The share of FDI in Metallurgical Industries in total FDI in India was 0.24% in 2007-08. The amount of FDI in Non-conventional Energy sector was $ 125.88 million in 2008-09. It increased by $ 67.06 million as compared to 2007-08. In percentage terms, the increase was 114.01%. The share of FDI in Metallurgical Industries in total FDI in India was 0.4% in 2008-09.

The amount of FDI in Non-conventional Energy sector was $ 622.52 million in 2009-10. It increased by $ 496.64 million as compared to 2008-09. In percentage terms, the increase was 394.53%. The share of FDI in Metallurgical Industries in total FDI in India was 2.41% in 2009-10. The amount of FDI in Non-conventional Energy sector was $ 214.4 million in 2010-11. It decreased by $ -408.12 million as compared to 2009-10. In percentage terms, the decrease was -65.56%. The share of FDI in Metallurgical Industries in total FDI in India was 1% in 2010-11.

The amount of FDI in Non-conventional Energy sector was $ 452.17 million in 2011-12. It increased by $ 237.77 million as compared to 2010-11. In percentage terms, the increase was 110.9%. The share of FDI in Metallurgical Industries in total FDI in India was 1.29% in 2011-12. The amount of FDI in Non-conventional Energy sector was $ 1106.52 million in 2012-13. It increased by $ 654.35 million as compared to 2011-12. In percentage terms, the increase was 144.71%. The share of FDI in Metallurgical Industries in total FDI in India was 4.93% in 2012-13.

The amount of FDI in Non-conventional Energy sector was $ 414.25 million in 2013-14. It decreased by $ -692.27 million as compared to 2012-13. In percentage terms, the decrease was -62.56%. The share of FDI in Metallurgical Industries in total FDI in India was 1.7% in 2013-14. The amount of FDI in Non-conventional Energy sector was $ 615.95 million in 2014-15. It increased by $ 201.7 million as compared to 2013-14. In percentage terms, the increase was 48.69%. The share of FDI in Metallurgical Industries in total FDI in India was 1.99% in 2014-15.

The amount of FDI in Non-conventional Energy sector was $ 776.51 million in 2015-16. It increased by $ 160.56 million as compared to 2014-15. In percentage terms, the increase was 26.07%. The share of FDI in Metallurgical Industries in total FDI in India was 1.94% in 2015-16.

The maximum annual growth in FDI in Non-conventional Energy sector of $ 654.35 million was recorded in the year 2012-13 during the period under consideration. The maximum annual growth in percentage terms in FDI in Non-conventional Energy sector of 2310.66% was recorded in the year 2007-08 during the period under consideration. The maximum share of FDI in Non-conventional Energy sector in total FDI in India of 4.93% was recorded in the year 2012-13 during the period under consideration.
